1943 2c Blue, Free Philippines Guerrilla Postal Service, full sheet of 25, without gum, fresh and Very Fine; also includes sheet of original waxed paper interleaving; fewer than 10 intact sheets are believed to existrnThese stamps were printed in Brisbane, Australia in November of 1943 as part of Gen MacArthur's Black Ops program. They were supplied to Guerrilla forces on the island of Mindanao under the leadership of Col Wendell Fertig. (Image)
1943 2c Blue, Free Philippines Guerrilla Postal Service tied by purple oval "Posted in the Free Philippines, Mindanao Guerilla Area, M.D. No. 10" 1944 date stamp on cover to "Mr Samuel J Wilson Jr/ For sake(sic)-keeping with Col Courtney Whitney", "Lt-Col Sam J Wilson/ Free Philippines" typed return address, additional boxed "We Depend Upon/ Gen. MacArthurs/ Pledge To Return" handstamp on each side, Very Fine, enclosure a Philippines postal money order for 50c and postmarked "Esperanza, Agusan/ Philippines Dec 31 1943"; this stamp was issued for use on the island of Mindanao, with only 500 printed and just 36 covers recordedrnCol Courtney Whitney (later Maj Gen) was a lawyer (had a private practice in Manila between stints in the Army) and Army commander on MacArthur's staff during World War II where he was assigned responsibility for Philippine civil affairs where from various accounts, he was a disastrous choice due to his belligerent nature. After the war he served as a senior official during the occupation of Japan and had a hand in drafting their new constitution along with noted philatelist Milo Rowell. (Image)
