703 2c Yorktown tied by October 5, 1931 Predated First Day Cover from Wenatchee, WA on the first nonstop flight from Japan to the United States bearing both cancellations and stamps for that flight. The reason for the 703 Predate is due to the fact that when the 75 covers that the aircraft was carrying arrived in Wenatchee they immediately received the new Yorktown stamp that had arrived that day for distribution on October 20th had been inadvertently handed out by the Postmaster. One of the pilots Hugh Herndon also signed this cover, the earliest legitimate use of the Yorktown stamp. A true rarity and one could only guess how many of the 75 covers will ever be in philatelic circles. Only the 3rd we have offered in nearly 40 years with sales in excess of $1,800.00. (Image)
