Worldwide Postal History and Postmarks

Sale No: 46
Lot No: 1313
Symbol: Cvr/O
Cat No: Australia and States

image Australia and States Extensive Collection of Town Postmarks on Stamp, all neatly displayed (alphabetically, by State) and mostly identified in four 32-page stockbooks. We counted 37 covers and cards, plus the following number of different post offices, counted by the owner as: New South Wales (x307), Tasmania (x60), Queensland (x118), Western Australia (x84), South Australia (x166) for a total of about 965 different towns. Some of the towns have different postmarks (c.d.s., squared circle, etc.), and a number of towns are represented on different stamps (with many better issues), so the total number of stamps will be in the thousands. A much better than average collection for the quality of the postmarks, as most of them are fully dated and socked on the nose. The collection also includes some numeral, and other type of non-town postmarks, again of better than usual quality. See our many random photos online for a glimpse into this lovely collection which includes a lengthy hand-written inventory of all of the different towns in the collection. (Image)

image Family Correspondence with Roughly 380 G.B. Covers or Cards, 1848-1920s, as received, with each cover having the original letter and contents within. The lot begins with roughly 40 covers, ranging from 1847 to 1856, franked with imperforate Penny Reds (some in pairs), to a Miss Duthie (Margaret Isabella Hamilton Duthie), and continues with roughly 270 covers from the late 1857 to 1880 franked with perforated Penny Reds, along with 2x perforated two pence blue, and 19x half penny bantams (mostly in pairs) addressed to Miss Duthie's husband and a few of their children. We note a few double weight rates (made up with pairs or combination frankings) along with a variety of postmark types including: duplex, boxed postmarks, grid numerals, small towns, along with postmarks in blue, red and green (on the backs of the covers). The lot concludes with 5 overseas letters, including a 5c Small Queen letter from Canada in 1880, and 4 from India in the 1920s, along with roughly 25 overseas postcards (mostly from France) and 40 Great Britain postcards from the 1920s, addressed to children A.V. Monro (Archibald Vere) and Margaret Ethel. A most intriguing opportunity for postmarks and plating finds, as only a few stamps have been plated by the owner, as noted on a few covers (unchecked by us), with a window to a family's personal history. We note some of the covers have small faults to a few having tears from rough opening. Overall fine to very fine. (Image)
