Datelined folded letter with red "Paid at Kirkwall" framed handstamp and matching "Kirkwall, 27 JN, 1842" framed backstamp, red manuscript "1/-" one shilling rating for transatlantic packet fee, Edinburgh red "Paid, Feb 1, 1842" transit cds, carried by Cunard Line Caledonia from Liverpool Feb. 4th, damaged by hurricane it put into Cork for repairs and returned to Liverpool Feb. 17th, the carried by Cunard Line Acadia to Halifax arriving Mar. 7th where American mails were transferred to the Cunard Line Unicorn to Boston, Very Fine and scarce voyage carried by three different Cunard vessels, ex-Bryan Wood.

This "Boston" straightline was given by the G.P.O. London to their representative in Boston (who may have been the British Consul) for use on letters handled by the British packets operating between Boston and Liverpool.

The 24 decimes prepayment included 4 decimes Belgium internal, 8 decimes British and 12 decimes transatlantic fees, of which 20 decimes or 1s8d was owed to G.B. Letter not rated at arrival port of Boston, but in New Orleans where large blue "12" was applied for the postage due (2¢ ship plus 10¢ U.S. inland fees).
