Cat No: 23 var.

image Mexico, 1866, Eagle (5th Period), 2r orange, Jalapa. Cons 128-1866, tied by "Jalapa, Agto 8" cds (after introduction of the Maximilian issue) on folded letter sheet to Puebla; some ink erosion in address panel, F.-V.F.
Scott No. 23 var.; Estimate $100 - 150.

This stamp is very scarce. John Bash (Mexicana April 1985, page 74) writes "3,000 were sent and 2,326 returned. I have only found this stamp with sub-number 14-1866 (Perote), but since this Perote shipment aggregated only 200 stamps, some usage at Jalapa itself must have occurred." He goes on to say that stamp used in 1866 from Jalapa are almost invariably trimmed close.
