image 1874 (Dec) cover to the United States (Pay Director U.S. Navy, Portsmouth, N.H.), franked with 30s gray, tied by cds, with red Yokohama Jan 4 pmk alongside, San Francisco Jan 25 at left, endorsed "Chefoo China U.S.S. Kearsarge", some cover wear and backflap missing, otherwise fine example of single 30s franking on cover, signed Tyler (USS Kearsarge is best known for her defeat of the Confederate commerce raider CSS Alabama off Cherbourg, France during the American Civil War. Kearsarge was recommissioned in 1874 and departed for Yokohama, arriving there on 11 May. She cruised the Asiatic Station for three years, protecting American interests in China, Japan, and the Philippines. Kearsarge was named for Mount Kearsarge in New Hampshire) (Cat No. 39) (Image)
