Cat No: Gebauer 16

image Gebauer #16, 1920 30c on 10c Green, featuring a barely visible impression of the surcharge which may have faded with time, on cover front addressed to Barranquilla, tied by “Cía de Navegación/Aérea/Agencia Barranquilla” ribbon handstamp in purple, handstamped with “22 FEB 1920” date adjacent, and bearing manuscript inscription in Spanish at left: “Souvenir of the first airmail flight. Cartagena, February 21, 1920” and signature by Mr. Soto; one of just three covers recorded exhibiting the 30 centavos surcharge on this stamp; ex-Johnson. The cover, which is not flown, was not franked with the required national postage, and the C.C.N.A. adhesive is tied by a Barranquilla handstamp which was not applied on any of the regularly flown covers. Mr. J. Soto very probably made an agreement with the C.C.N.A. and prepared a very small quantity of covers to be given to friends, although these were dated as from the First Flight of February 22. Nevertheless, one may hypothesize, and it is also believed by few collectors, that these souvenir covers were flown on the first stage (Cartagena-Barranquilla) of the flight by the “Medellín” of 30 November 1920 (the plane suffered a breakdown at El Banco), since the surcharge of 30 centavos corresponded to the C.C.N.A. Nevertheless, this hypothesis can not be demonstrated and, on the other hand, the national postage is missing. (Image)

Colombiana de Navegación/Aérea/Medellín” ribbon handstamp, uprated for national postage with 3c., tied by duplex datestamp of Medellin, which also ties this vignette and, at foot, part of “Agencia Postal Nacional/Cartagena Colombia” framed datestamp.A small number of vignettes were surcharged “0-20” and “0-30” with typewriter, and were to be used on the return flight of the “Medellín” from Medellín to Cartagena via Puerto Berrío. The plane, on its flight up-river, run out of fuel near San Bartolomé on the way to Puerto Berrío, after 3 hours and 30 minutes, and it was destroyed overnight by a storm. The few covers carried were consequently sent by surface mail for onward transmission.Taking into consideration the scarcity of the typewritten surcharge, and that only two covers are recorded bearing this provisional stamp, this is one of the extraordinary rarities of the early Colombian airmails; the great visual appeal of this cover is also enhanced by the only application known on cover of the embossed “Cía-Colombiana/De Navegación Aérea” publicity label illustrated with a biplane, which was also tied on dispatch; ex-Neuburger and Johnson (Image)

Illustrated on page 24 of Kessler’s “The Air Posts of Colombia”, as well as on page 48 of Eugenio Gebauer’s “The Air Post of Colombia”, where this item, together with other three covers -to the same addressee and destination city-, are illustrated, and all four are described by the famous author and editor of the book as “THE GREATEST FIND IN SCADTA STAMPS” with the following text: “A discovery in the early thirties among old office correspondence of the ‘American Woolen Products Co.’ brought to light a number of envelopes mailed by their Colombian representative in 1921. The four covers illustrated are the outstanding pieces among this correspondence showing the legitimate usage of the varieties catalogued. (...). All four covers illustrated were regularly used on business correspondence and are unique in the opinion of the Editor”.
