Blue folded letter with rare manuscript "Bay Route, Mch 28" postmark and matching "10" rating, sent by rail from Philadelphia to Baltimore, ship on Chesapeake Bay Route to Norfolk, Petersburg & Roanoke R.R. to Weldon N.C.; light aging, Fine, ex-Kramer.
Estimate; $500 - 750.

The "Great Mail" north-south mail route utilized the Chesapeake Bay between December 1847 and December 1848. The manuscript Route Agent's marking is believed to pre-date a handstamp that was employed in late Spring of 1848.
