image 1800 (20 May) FL from Dominica to Ireland, from Lt Andre Hamilton of the 65th regiment, posted at the 2/11 (2sh11p) prevailing rate, rather than the concessionary rate because of his rank. Sent by Falmouth Packet, plus inland United Kingdom and Irish Packet boat, then 7 pence extra (or 3/6 Three Shillings six pence) from Boyle to Ballymote. Lt Hamilton writes to his uncle about his bout with yellow fever and his desire to journey to St. Croix to rest and recuperate. He gives details of chasing French privateers. A fine letter sent by an Irishman during his active duty service in Dominica, during the Napoleonic Wars (Image)

image 1809 FL Ireland, from W.C. Berisford aboard the "HMS Barfluer", at sea, to his wife in Ireland, regarding the battle for Portugal and the defeat of his troops during the Peninsular War (1808-14). "He got a most complete beating for his pains, we have lost our commander Sir John Moor and Sir David Baird lost an arm". The unpaid letter was put ashore at Falmouth and assessed 1/4 Shillings, including the Captains' fees and a Ship Letter Fee. Routed to London and re-assessed 1/11 shillings to pay for further transmission to Ireland, canceled with "Irish Mermaid" in red ink (The Peninsular War was the military conflict fought by Spain, the United Kingdom and Portugal against the invading and occupying forces of France for control of the Iberian Peninsula during the Napoleonic Wars, 1808-14) (Image)

image 1834 (24 May) FL from J.W.P. Grant, in Lisbon, Portugal, regarding the Civil War to Colonel Badcock, HQ, 15th Hussars in Ireland, redirected to him at the United Services Club in London, with Portsmouth, with additional markings. The letter gives news of developments during the departure of Colonel Badcock on the "Nautilus" in April of that year. A fine usage to Ireland during the Portuguese Civil War, "the War of the Two Brothers" (Pedro and Miguel) or "Miguelite War" (a war between liberal constitutionalists and conservative absolutists in Portugal over royal succession that lasted from 1828-34) (Image)
