Scott No. 1; Estimate $750 - 1,000.

A WONDERFUL ROMAN NUMERAL "X" CANCELLATION IN MANUSCRIPT ON A 1847 5¢ ISSUE FROM LANSINGBURGH, N.Y.

This is one of three recorded usages of the 5¢ issue from Lansingburgh, N.Y. (with only one 10¢ usage known) and the only example bearing this unusual manuscript cancel. This may have been a provisional usage to uprate the cover to 10 cents for a double rate to Philadelphia due to a possible shortage of 10¢ adhesives. The Alexander book records 1200 5¢ adhesives being sent to Lansingburgh and only 100 10¢ adhesives.

Scott No. 11; Estimate $150 - 200.

The area was later split from Milford and became the town of Hopedale, Massachusetts.

Ballou believed that he could create a utopian community blending the features of a factory town with those of a religion-based commune. The community stood for temperance, abolitionism, women's rights, spiritualism and education. 14 years after the land was purchased, Hopedale went bankrupt.

Scott No. 17; $17,500 as o.g.

AN EXTRAORDINARY MINT NEVER HINGED PAIR OF THE 12¢ 1851 IMPERFORATE IN THE FINEST CONDITION

THE SMQ VALUE FOR A SINGLE GRADED 100J IS A STAGGERING $165,000, A PAIR IS UNPRICED.

The postal Act of March 3, 1851, was to provide for relatively inexpensive postage and new graduated postal rates coupled with the issuance of new 1¢, 3¢, and 12¢ stamps. The new rates of July 1851 did not include a basic single rate that would require a 12¢ stamp. The prepaid letter rate of 3¢ per half ounce up to 3,000 miles, or 6¢ beyond, and 1¢ for printed circulars. As such, the 12¢ value could only prepay multiple rates such as four times the 3¢ letter rate for up to 3,000 miles, or double the 6¢ rate for over 3,000 miles. There were no 12¢ rates even in foreign mails. For a time, the stamps were cut in half and accepted as 6¢ on letters from California. The only transatlantic postage rate listed in the 1851 Postal Guide that is a listed multiple of 12¢ is to Great Britain (24¢), which turns out to be the most common use of the stamp.

Toppan, Carpenter, Casilear & Co. engraved the plates and printed the 1¢, 3¢ and 12¢ 1851 stamps in time for the July 1 issue date. While official government records reveal that the denominations were distributed to many post offices on or about July 1, 1851, the earliest confirmed usage of the 12¢ value is August 4, 1851. Moreover, while the Post Office had delivered over 230,000 stamps by June 30, 1852, there are only about a dozen uses documented for the entire last six months of 1851. This is in contrast to the 1¢ and 3¢ stamps, for which numerous first day of issue covers are known to exist as well as hundreds or thousands of covers from 1851. The number of dated uses for the 12¢ stamps gradually increased in 1853 and beyond. Eventually, about 800,000 imperforate stamps were to be distributed. The imperforate 12¢ stamps were in use until mid-1857, when perforations were introduced. Plate 1 was used to print 12¢ stamps until Plate 3 was put into use in 1860, the latter only used for the perforate issue.

The addressee, founder of the United States Naval Academy, Secretary of the Navy, Ambassador to Great Britain and to Spain, was the pre-eminent American historian of the 19th century. His massive multi-volume History of the United States is still a basic reference today. While the sender's address may have been rather flowery, it hardly overstated the case.

image 1857, 3¢ dull red, type III. Tied by "Cleveland O. Jul 23, 1860" cds on cover with spectacular Abraham Lincoln and Hannibal Hamlin campaign cover to Des Moines Iowa; design shows beardless Lincoln portrait design with "The Cold Water Candidate" heading and additional overprinting "Temperance and Freedom" advertising on face by "The Analyst" newspaper weekly of Cleveland Oh., flap with additional subscription info, minor flap opening tear, Very Fine and choice, with 2019 P.F. certificate. Milgram No. AL-36 var.
Scott No. 26; Estimate $5,000 - 7,500.

AN EXCEPTIONAL EXAMPLE OF THIS RARE LINCOLN AND HAMLIN "THE COLDWATER CANDIDATE" 1860 CAMPAIGN DESIGN OVERPRINTED WITH TEMPERANCE AND FREEDOM CAMPAIGN SENTIMENTS.

Temperance advocates embraced Lincoln as their choice for president in the 1860 election, naming him the "Cold Water" candidate. Envelope designs using this temperance theme are rare, and they were all published by M. H. Allardt of Cleveland. The Analyst newspaper was started in 1858 by J. A. Spencer, who apparently sold it to M. H. Allardt before 1860. Including this cover, we are aware of only four examples of the AL-36 design, but no other examples with the additional temperance overprint on face.
