image 1847-1893 Postmaster General Book Containing the Complete Set of Proofs, with all issues in period, each on India paper mounted in a soft-bound book (coming apart), gifted to Messrs. Hamlin and Hamlin by the Postmaster General the Hon. Wilson S. Bissell, in 1893, who then gifted it to a family member in 1959. The proofs consist of the 1847 issues (reproduction #s 3 and 4), the 1851s are a mix of perforated and imperforate designs, up to the 1893 issues, including the Columbians, Special Delivery, Postage Due, Carriers, Newspaper and all of the Officials. The book is accompanied by a letter (with corner card envelope (stamp missing)) from the Postmaster General (on his letter head) to the Hamlin boys' father explaining the gift. A quick calculation of the value on the stamps gives us a catalogue value of about US$22,500. A remarkable group, surely unique and would be a great addition to any proof collection or serious United States collection. All 23 pages of the book are scanned online, as well as the two page letter. Rsv. $7,500. (Image)

image Collection of Mint and Used United States and Possessions, 1861-1993, consisting of three albums of primarily used stamps. The collection begins with selections of classics with 1861 issues (including a few with grills, unchecked for types), along with 1870s issues of Continental, National, and American Bank Note issues (as identified by the owner), and continues with a good selection of used material up to the 1970s. We note a number of stamps cataloguing $20 and higher in the album. The lot continues with a second album containing roughly 300 stamps of primarily used United States possessions including: Hawaii, Canal Zone, Philippines, and Puerto Rico. Better items include Scott #s: Hawaii 46 (used, c.v. $65), 52C (used, c.v. $150), along with a few Canal Zone 1909-1910 Specimen stamps, and Philippines #212 (used, c.v. $225). The third album consists of used material from the 1970s to the 1990s. We note faults with some of the early material, along with heavy postmarks on the used material, and a few no gum mint stamps. A good lot for the specialist as there could be some interesting finds. Online scans show a representation of the lot. Overall fine to very fine. (Image)
