image 1917 Internment Camp, Ellis Island, N.Y. 1¢ Jefferson postal card to Leipzig, Germany with purple "Correspondence of Interned Seaman, No Charge for Postage" handstamp and manuscript "free!" over indicia, matching "Censored, U.S. Dept. of Justice, Ellis Island, N.Y.", sent from the 2nd engineer of the steamship Sachsenwald, Very Fine and choice, very rare.

After the declaration of war to Germany on April 6, the United States confiscated 94 German merchant ships in 23 harbors. Members of the crews (375 officers and 1,300 sailors and stewards) of the 27 vessels in the harbor of New York were interned on Ellis Island.
