image 1941 Cover to State Dept Official, Chicago Dec 1 1941 slogan cancel ties 901 to envelope addressed to "David W Lamm/ Foreign Mailing Room/ Dept of State/ Washington DC", the address is crossed out in pencil and two "Return to Sender (over)" handstamps applied, the "David" also crossed out and ms "Donald?" inserted, the "over" refers to a multi-line handstamp on back side stating "Department of State cannot forward because pouch service to post of addressee suspended. However, if sender desires, Department will forward this letter on exchange vessel which is being sent soon from U.S. and on which addressee is expected to return to U.S. In this event sender should sign in space below and return letter and envelope to Department under cover of outer envelope addressed to "Secretary of State, Washington, D.C."/ I wish this letter forwarded on the exchange vessel" and the original sender added his signature, also on back is a Washington DC Feb 19 1942 machine cancel and a "Division of Foreign/ Service Administration/ Feb 18 1942/ Department of State" handstamp, Very FinernDonald W Lamm (1914-96) was a Vice-Consul stationed in Tokyo from 1939-42 and later served as Vice Consul in Pernambuco, 1942-47; US Consul in Lourenco Marques, 1949-52; US Consul General in Lourenco Marques, as of 1952; Accra, as of 1954 and US Charge d'Affaires to Ghana 1957-58. image 1943 "MS Grispsholm" Related Covers, three covers; Aug 1943 censored to a civilian American internee at the Davao Internment Camp in The Philippines with a typed ""The Gripsholm" at lower left and ms "St Tomas"; Oct 1943 addressed to "Brayton Meyer/ repatriate on MS Grisholm/ c/o The American Embassy/ Rio De Janeiro/ Brazil" with censor tape and handstamp, C27, C30 franking; Nov 1943 censored (multiple tapes and handstamp) to USA with printed "Motorship Gripsholm" cc and Brazilian franking, usual postal wear/ opening flaws but Fine overallrnThe M.S. Gripsholm was a Swedish cruise ship chartered by the U.S. government to transport civilians and POWs caught behind enemy lines during World War II. Between 1942 and 1946, the "Mercy Ship" participated in a dozen exchanges between the U.S. and its wartime enemies; Germany, Italy and Japan. image 1943 Cover to POW Brig Gen Clifford Bluemel, legal-sized envelope with typed "FREE" plus "Prisoner of War" and Cambridge A Mass Aug 18 1943 machine cancel, addressed to "Brigadier General; Clifford Bluemel/ Prisoner of War of the Japanese/ Taiwan/ Care International Red Cross/ Tokyo, Japan/ Via, New York, N.Y.", Japanese censor mark, censor tape at left, ms "Recd Feb 22, 44", wife's ms return address on backflap, bit roughly opened at right and partially along top and bottom, some tape residue at left, still a Fine usernBrig Gen Clifford Bluemel (1885-1973) commanded the 31st Division during the Battle of Bataan before being captured by Japanese forces. He survived the Bataan Death March, was held as a prisoner of war from Apr 1942 to Aug 1945. He received the Distinguished Service Cross in 1946 before retiring. (Image)

image 1944-45 Los Alamos, New Mexico Soldier Covers, two covers from a soldier stationed at Los Alamos with Santa Fe NM machine cancels and addressed to the soldier's fianc+¬/ wife in the Bronx NY; 1) "PO Box 1663/ Santa Fe, NM" return address on envelope with "USO" logo on backflap, sender was Pfc at the time - Box 1663 was used for the 5000 "residents" at the Los Alamos National Laboratory; 2) "Spec. Eng. Det./ PO Box 166 180/ Santa Fe NM" return address (the "166" is crossed out probably since the sender was used to using the "Box 1663" address), sender now a S/Sgt, envelope marked "Free", - box 180 was opened around the start of 1945 for the members of the special engineering detachment at Los Alamos; neither cover carries any censor markings or tape and there are some minor faults from opening, postal wear, etc., Fine pair (Image)
