1917 2c deep rose, Ty. Ia, Imperforate, with Schermack perfs clearly visible at left, neat wavy lines machine cancel, characteristic rich color, faint corner crease at top left, fine example of this rarity, of which only 40 (!) copies recorded (Scott 482A was issued imperforate by the Bureau of Engraving and Printing and sold to the Schermack Company for use in its patented stamp affixing machines, which typically applied stamps one at a time, so in most cases, the hyphen-hole perfs on one side would be cut off. Most surviving examples are either cut well into the design or have the Schermack perfs trimmed away on one side). An important 20th Century U.S. rarity, with 1977 and 2017 PFCs, cat. $65000 (Cat No. 482A) (Image)

1923 Rotary perf. 11, 1c green, part original gum, usual centering, tiny thin spot, otherwise fine, one of only eight (!) known with original gum, with 1971 and 2008 PFCs. One of the rarest 20th Century United States stamps in unused condition (the 1c green, Scott 594, is waste from a horizontal rotary printing used to make coils. At the beginning or end of a coil-stamp print run from the 170-subject rotary plates, some leading or trailing paper was produced that was too short for rolling into 500-stamp rolls. In 1919 the Bureau devised a plan to salvage this waste by perforating and cutting the sheets into panes. They were put through the 11-gauge flat-plate perforator in use at the time, giving the sheets full perforations on all sides. The existence of Scott 594 was not reported until four months after the final sheets were delivered, and the 1c Rotary perf. 11 was soon recognized as one of the rarest United States stamps) cat. $65000 (Cat No. 594) (Image)
