"U.S. Frigate Minnesota Hampton Roads (Va)", sender's manuscript endorsement with "SHIP" in lozenge and "3" handstamps on cover to Ipswich Mass., with original letter six page letter datelined "Hampton Roads Sep. 18th, 1861" that reads in part, "The Rebels make their brags. Most will never ask for ??? but they asked for it there and we gave it to them. They surrendered everything to us, 732 men and officers. After they came aboard, … they said they never wanted to fight against sailors any more for they had had enough of it already. They said there was only 27 killed but we have found out since that there was nearly three hundred of them dispatched by us, and if they had hoisted the white flag, they would not have come off so well as they did…Although the Rebels are strongly fortified, have yet when the word comes we will turn them out and ??? our troops into the very forts they now occupy, as we did at Hatteras, although I suppose we will not come off so well as we did there, fr we did not have a single man even wounded. Gen. Wool seems more considerable altercations about here since he took Butlers place and is liked twice as well. The Rebels have a Li?? Wheel steamer which they are going to run by the Blockade with she is sheathed with Iron 3 inches thick, but they will never get out of here, for we keep steamers up all the time and if she comes this way inland to ??? the Minnesota right alongside of her and take her at the point of the sword, or not I know they will have a good time of it there…The privateers are nearly all cleaned out. We have mostly 20 of them crews aboard of us now. We have taken on 4 prizes from them within a week…" Very Fine and attractive, the U.S.S.
