SAN FRANCISCO July 2, well-struck straightline handstamp with magenta manuscript "July 2" and "40" rate on folded letter datelined "Sacramento City, June 26" and begins with "Dear Brother Chas., I have but a moment to write before we are off for the diggers on the north fork of the American river about fifty miles from this place…they are getting from one to four ounces of gold a day. I do not think there is a great prospect of getting rich but we shall see…We are all together now, in good spirits & are determined to try our try our luck with our wash bowls & shovels. No man need come here without expecting the experience much sacrifice of comfort. If we are permitted to return in safety, I shall be grateful. There is no danger here or at the mines from robberies.
