Romney is in Hampshire County that would later be incorporated into the Union State of West Virginia in 1863. Francis Buckner Jones (1828-1862) was an 1848 graduate of VMI, and mortally wounded in action at Gaines Mill on June 27, 1862 and died on July 9, 1862. He was in the 2nd Regiment of Va. Vol. that was part of Gen. R.J (Stonewall) Jackson's command. In January 1862, Jackson made a march on the are of Romney.
