The 13th Texas Infantry Regiment was organized during the fall of 1861 and included Bates' Texas Infantry Battalion. The unit contained artillery, cavalry, and infantry companies and was reorganized several times. Attached to the Trans-Mississippi Department, it served in Texas guarding the coast between Galveston and Matagorda.

Bold strike of cds with matching bold "5" rating handstamp and manuscript "Due" rating on circa 1862 buff cover addressed to Vaucluse, Frederick Co. Va., endorsed "Frank B. Jones, Major 2nd Inftry Va. Vols", opening tears and some edge wear, Fine.

Romney is in Hampshire County that would later be incorporated into the Union State of West Virginia in 1863. Francis Buckner Jones (1828-1862) was an 1848 graduate of VMI, and mortally wounded in action at Gaines Mill on June 27, 1862 and died on July 9, 1862. He was in the 2nd Regiment of Va. Vol. that was part of Gen. R.J (Stonewall) Jackson's command. In January 1862, Jackson made a march on the are of Romney. The idea was to break up the railroads in that area, but the campaign turned out to be a failure.

Traveler's Repose was a confederate encampment at the famous Inn and Tavern on the Staunton-Parkersburg Pike. The Confederate Army was camped here during the Winter of 1861-62. In the Spring of 1862, they pulled back to Staunton Va.
