image (Indian Territory) Rev. Abel Bingham Correspondence, 1822-34. Six folded letters to Rev. Abel Bingham, a Baptist Missionary to the Indians; first 1822 letter to "the Chief (John Littlebeau) of the Tonawanda (N.Y.) Reservation and Mr. Bingham the teacher of the school in that place…all the Chiefs here advise Mr. Bingham" to continue teaching at the reservation and advise the Indians to cooperate, 2nd & 3rd letters (1826 & 1828) datelined "Carey, Mich. Ter. 100 miles N.W. of Fort Wayne, Ind.", latter with manuscript Fort Wayne, Ind. postmark, very interesting letters tell of journey from N.Y., work at Mission, shipwreck, Indian treaties, urge Bingham to come to the proposed Mission & Indian school at Sault de St. Marie, 4th 1832 letter with red "Mackinac" cds and headed "Grand Traverse Bay" to Sault Ste. Marie with writer complaining that local Missionary is more interested in farming than teaching Indians, last two letters (1833 & 1834) personal & humorous in nature, one headed "Fort Brady, M.T."; all but first going through the mails, an interesting chronicle of early Missionary work.

image (Massachusetts) "Nantucket 7 Mo 10th 1776". Quaker-date dateline on folded letter sent privately from shipping merchant Christopher Starbuck endorsed "p Saml Starbuck" to Nicholas Brown at Providence R.I., letter concerns purchase of vessels and cargo of fresh fish, mention William Rotch, scion of the important Nantucket and later New Bedford shipping and whaling enterprise; some toning and edge splitting, Fine and scarce early Nantucket letter sent during the Revolutionary War.
Estimate; $200 - 300.

One of William Rotch's vessels, the "Bedford", was involved in the 1775 Boston Tea Party. The addressee, Nicholas Brown, was himself a member of a prominent Providence merchant shipping firm, who during the Revolution relocated to Nantucket following the British blockade of the Rhode Island coast. The Island of Nantucket was neutral during the Revolutionary War. Once safely on the island, he joined forces with Christopher Starbuck in a joint venture.

Clear strike of two-line postmark on 1787 folded letter datelined "Biddeford June 16. 1789" free to the Honorable Goerge Thatcher, Member of Congress, New York, some interesting political content "…I can easily conceive the difficulty that naturally attends the management of the different Departments necessary for the completion of a national Government, especially where different powers, accustomed to different modes, are to be formed into a general system. I am pleased to hear that the duty on Molasssas is reduced, but more so to find the drawback on manufactured Rum exported taken off - for I do verily believe that there is not a greater avenue to smuggling possible to be admitted into a revenue system then that of drawbacks…" and also mentions of a 15-year-old drowning, Very Fine and early statehood cover.
