ONE OF THE FINEST RECORDED TERRITORIAL USES FROM GOLD DIRT.

Only manuscript postmarks are known from this important but short-lived stamping mill town. Gold Dirt was located in Gilpin County south and west of Rollinsville. In its early days, Gold Dirt produced two million dollars worth of gold. The ex-Bauer faulty example of this manuscript postmark realized $1,380 in our Sale 88.

"CWL, 3 #" cancel on 3¢ rose (65), couple of blunt perfs, on neat orange cover to New York, stamp interestingly canceled with sender's initials, even though he was not the postmaster, Very Fine and attractive, one of the finest manuscript uses, ex-Persson.

In 1859 when prospectors flocked to Tarryall in South Park, they found a most unhospitable welcome. What's more it seemed as if all the best mining sites had been staked out. Therefore a number left and settled a community they called Fair Play to contrast the reception they had found at Tarryall.

Until 1870 the residents of this and other nearby communities lived in constant danger of Indian raids. For protection, a fort called Lincoln Fort was built, commanded and garrisoned by local pioneers.
