New Haven, Ct., 1874 reprint, 5¢ carmine (Scott 8XU1R var.), unsigned, cut square, a tantalizing item with intense color and exceptionally clear print; this unsigned variety is unlisted in Scott, this particular piece having a copperplate handwritten inscription on reverse reading, "This impression was made by the original stamp used by E.S. Mitchell in the New Haven P.O. in 1847. Presented to Lennie Hotchkiss by Ned. Mitchell, Grandson of the above E.S. Mitchell." (note he gives his grandfather's initials as E. S. rather than E.A.); horizontal crease and light staining at top, otherwise Very Fine, a neat piece. Estimate $1,000 - 1,500. (Image)
