Four clear to large margins, center surface scuffing, cancelled by manuscript "V" cancel on blue folded letter with red "Providence, Sep 12" and matching "Paid" and "5" rating handstamp to East Cambridge Mass., a Very Fine use,Slater Census #7, ex-Makepeace, with 2017 P.F. certificate. This cover was part of "The Booth Find" that produced Slater covers Nos. 7 and 8. They were found among the papers of Dr. C. Booth papers in an old trunk in April 1926. Slater was shown the covers by Philip H. Ward Jr. at the New York 1926 International Stamp Exhibition. He made an offer of $300 for the two, but there were sold to another collector, Franklin Allen of Greenfield Mass. Scott $6,500 (Image)

Instead, it was meant to keep a messenger honest. When a bank employee was sent with the mail and cash to pay the postage, this mark alerted the postal clerk that the mail was to be prepaid. Jul 6" cds, additional "Paid" handstamp adjacent and cds at left on 1849 blue folded letter to St. Paul, Minnesota Territory, F.-V.F. and unique 10¢ usage from Goshen,Census 5735, ex-Hart, with 2012 P.F. certificate. Scott No. 2; Estimate $750 - 1,000.
Alexander Wilkin, to whom the cover is addressed, came to St. Paul, following his service as a captain in the Mexican war, in 1849. At various times he was engaged in a law practice and at one time was the U.S. Marshall for Minnesota. In 1851 to 1853 he was secretary of the territory and in 1855 he went to the Crimea to study the Crimean War. In 1861 he organized the first company of the First Minnesota regiment and in 1862 he became the colonel of the Ninth Minnesota in the Civil War. Wilkin was killed in the battle of Tupelo, Mississippi on July 14, 1864. Wilkin County was named for Alexander Wilkin. Est. $750-1,000 (Image)
