Cat No: S1E-Ze

image 1873, 1¢ Essays on Buff, "POD" with Bars Essay Watermark. Group of 9 different colors comprising 13 k/1 and similar deeper shade/impression, 15 k/1, 17 h/1, 17 j/1, 17 l/2, 43 l/2, 47 m/0, 63 k/1; couple with flaws, F.-V.F. and rare group.
USPCC No. S1E-Ze; $6,750.

The essay watermark reads up or down on the trial colors. The trial colors exist in two types (Ze and Zf) with and without bars above and/or below the letters. The same sheets of paper may have both types of watermarks. The cardstock was cut and used indiscriminately with respect to the watermark position. Cards show only "P" or "OD". No attempt was made to cut and position cardstock to print with complete "POD". It is probable that pure chance resulted in cards with or without watermarks as some ink colors exist with or without watermarks and in various positions.

USPCC No. S4Pa-l; $2,400.

The following proofs are printed in black ink on cards that resemble, but are different from the regularly issued cards. They were probably printed from the typographed die, or a heavy impression from the plate, as the shape of the design shows clearly on the back when held nearly parallel with a strong light, even on the thickest cards. This impression is not generally visible on regularly issued cards.
