image NY-Ear2, Earlville, NY on UY7r (UPSS R14), 1915 1c Green on cream, 1951 printed precancel on reply card, back side with ad for "Sherburne Rendering Works" (a "Knacker") with a printed image in line for its offering of "$1 for dead horses and cows if called the same day animal dies" and offering more for old or disabled horses, some light moisture staining, one pass of the press would print the address (and precancel) on one side of the card and the message on the other; just five examples of this card knownrn"Knacker" is an English term for a buyer of worn-out domestic animals or their carcasses for use especially as animal food or fertilizer. The date of use is inferred from an advertisement placed by the Shelburne Rendering Works in the Syracuse Herald Journal issue of Jan 13 1952. (Image)

image OK-Paw1, Pawnee Okla (Sec 562 P.L. & R.) on UX27 (UPSS S37E), 1925/30 1c Green on buff, 1936 precancel on card announcing an auction of the contents of the "101 Ranch", somewhat soiled as it was found (along with the other two known cards) on the floor of an old railroad mail car, quite rarernThe Miller Brothers 101 Ranch was a 110,000-acre cattle ranch in the Indian Territory of Oklahoma before statehood. Located near modern-day Ponca City, it was founded by Colonel George Washington Miller, a veteran of the Confederate Army, in 1893. The ranch was the birthplace of the 101 Ranch Wild West Show whose cast, over its history, included Lillian Smith, Bill Pickett, Bessie Herberg, Bee Ho Gray, Tom Mix, Jack Hoxie, Mexican Joe, Ross Hettan, and an elderly Buffalo Bill. It was also one of the early focal points of the oil rush in northeastern Oklahoma (the oil company initially formed went on to become today's ConocoPhillips). It was the largest diversified farm and ranch in America at the time. Bill Pickett's grave and the White Eagle Monument are located on the ranch grounds. (Image)

Although women did serve in the Armed Forces during WW II, it was not until 1948 that President Truman signed PL625 which allowed women to become permanent, regular members of the U.S. Armed Forces. 1950 is the first year after passage of that law that the dates listed for the fair occurred on Wednesday through Saturday.
