image Q6 10c Steamship & Tender, Q5 5c Mail Train, Q1 1c Post Office Clerk combination on piece with January 1, 1913 Mishawaka, Ind. hand cancel First Day of Issue. A truly remarkable item and the single most important Parcel Post First Day we have offered. The only item we have sold that somewhat compares with this was a single usage Q5 5c value used on piece that we sold in Public Auction #110 over a decade ago for a then record price of over $12,000.00! This item has an incredible history as it is considered the earliest known use for any Parcel Post stamp since it was mailed one hour before the famed package sent by Postmaster General Hitchcock to Washington DC at 12 o'clock midnight eastern standard time on December 31, 1912. This package was canceled at 10:00 o'clock Central time Standard Time a full hour before the official first package was mailed in Washington. This piece is accompanied by a receipt of Insured Parcel tag dated January 1, 1913 as the date was changed at 7 o'clock, the usual practice in the Mishawaka post office at that time. D.H. Wilber who mailed the package was Assistant Postmaster at Mishawaka. The original "period" manuscript on the reverse reads "This Wrapper enclosed the first parcel post package mailed in the United States under the parcel post system at this office the receiving stamps on changed after 7 P.M. to the date of the following day. This package mailed at 10:00 P.M. on December 31, 1912 one hour before Postmaster General Hitchkock mailed the first package in Washington, D.C. Mailed by D.H. Wilber Asst. P.M." We also note the following "period" manuscript on the reverse of the insurance receipt "First insurance tag issued for parcel post first package in U.S. mailed 12/31/12 10 p.m." Brookman catalog value for 10c alone is $12,500.00. Certainly considered one of the most important First Days of this short lived and popular series of stamps and an exceptional exhibit item and a must for the Parcel Post specialist. (Image)
