image (New Jersey Steam Navigation Co., L.I. Sound Route 801) "Steamer 5". Complete strike of red oval rating handstamp with additional manuscript "Providence" and red "STEAM" straightline on gray folded letter datelined "Providence Nov. 26th 1846" to Philadelphia Pa., carried by either the Oregon or Knickerbocker west from Stonington to New York on Route 801; minor staining in address, otherwise Very Fine.
Estimate; $400 - 600.

A RARE EXAMPLE OF THE "STEAMER 5" ROUTE AGENT HANDSTAMP USED IN CONJUNCTION WITH THE PROVIDENCE "STEAM" STRAIGHTLINE.

Late in 1846, a collision forced the "Oregon" out of service. While being repaired, the route agent removed "Oregon" from the "Steamer Oregon, 5" oval handstamp. This handstamp now read "Steamer 5" was used on the replacement vessel as well as the "Oregon" when she returned to service in mid-1847. The "Steamer 5" oval was used only from November 21st to Oct. 27th 1847.

image (New Jersey Steam Navigation Co., L.I. Sound Route 801) "Steamer 10". Complete strike of red oval rating handstamp on gray folded letter datelined "Providence April 28th 1847" to Elmira N.Y., carried by either the Oregon or Knickerbocker west from Stonington to New York on Route 801; minor wax spot, otherwise Very Fine.
Estimate; $300 - 400.

ONE OF ONLY NINE RECORDED "STEAMER 10" USAGES ON THE STONINGTON-NEW YORK WESTWARD SAILING.

The route agent's "Steamer 10" rating handstamp is not known with the Oregon suffix. The census of 10¢ covers on this route reveals the rarity of this marking on covers going west from Stonington to New York.
