H.R. Harmer GPN, Inc. Sale: 3047

United States
New Mexico Postal History
Sale No: 3047
Lot No: 3739
Symbol:
image "Fort Union N Mex June 20th 1864" heading on a letter from a resident at the fort (William Payne) to his mother and sister in Harrisonville Mo, the envelope (upper right corner torn away) has portion of a manuscript "Ft. Union" postmark (?) and docketing indicates it was received July 13, long letter with some interesting comments concerning availabillty of a stage to Santa Fe to take mail, concerns for a friend's cattle drive, noting that a cousin in California "...is now a strong Lincoln man (but) voted for Douglas last Presidential election..", also another 1864 letter from the same person at the Fort to his sister dated Feb 29 in which he expresses happiness at his sister's return to health, interacting with some of the natives and mentioning a couple by name, rnWhen New Mexico became a US territory after the U.S.- Mexican War, the army established garrisons in towns scattered along the Rio Grande to protect the area's inhabitants and travel routes. This arrangement proved unsatisfactory for many reasons, and in April 1851, Lt. Col. Edwin V. Sumner, commanding Military Department No. 9 (which included New Mexico Territory), was ordered "to revise the whole system of defense" for the entire territory. Among his first acts was to break up the scattered garrisons and relocate them in posts closer to the Indians. He also moved his headquarters and supply depot from Santa Fe, "that sink of vice and extravagance," to a site near the Mountain and Cimarron branches of the Santa Fe Trail, where he established Fort Union. The Third Fort Union (1862 - 1891) was built in the traditional "territorial" style, and was constructed using native resources such as clay, stone, and lumber. The Post at Fort Union was made to accommodate four companies, both cavalry and infantry; and the Fort Union Quartermaster Depot was equipped to supply all other New Mexico forts. As the central supply hub for all New Mexico posts, the Fort Union depot was larger than the Post, and it employed more men, mostly civilians. (Image)
