General Postal History by Year

Sale No: 779
Lot No: 364

image c. 1875, a philatelic pastiche: Dockstader minstrels card. A pastiche is a work of art that imitates the style of some previous work. In this example, the inspiration was drawn from the Liberty Head postal card of 1875. Created as an advertising piece for professional minstrel, Lew Dockstader, the card portrays images of Blacks and has a message on the reverse promoting a popular patent medicine. This card was written up in an accompanying article in the November 1995 issue of The American Philatelist. An exceedingly scarce card, ex Charles Fricke. (Image)
