image Atlanta, Ga, 6XU6, 10c Black entire, nice strikes of the "Paid 10" provisional handstamp plus "Atlanta Ga Nov 27 1861" cds, addressed to "Capt BC Yancey FD/ Cobbs Geo. Legion/ Yorktown Va", a bit of edge wrinkling but overall Very Fine (Scott $550)rnrnBenjamin Cunningham Yancey (1836-1909) was the son of renowned William Lowndes Yancey, U.S. Congressman and Confederate Senator from Alabama, the first Confederate Commissioner sent to England and France by President Davis. Ben served through most of the war as captain of the artillery, eventually becoming Lt. Colonel of the 17th Battalion of Alabama Sharpshooters. The 17th served with distinction at Murfreesboro, Chickamauga, and Missionary Ridge, as well as the bloody campaigns in and around Atlanta.rn (Image)

Oct. 10 1861" cds applied at the regular post office, ms "Paid" at upper right, stamp with full to large margins has been lifted and hinged in place, under the stamp is an area outlining where a half dime was glued in place, the coin was removed and the stamp was applied in New Orleans, Very Fine and rare use being cancelled at both the wharfside and main post offices on successive days, also just one of two reported such uses; 2014 PF certificate; ex-Knapp, Emerson, Silver, Simon, Myerson (Image)
