image "Mitchellsville Tenn, Decr 24, 1862". Manuscript postmark with dating canceling faulty 3¢ rose (65), corner folded, on light yellow cover to West Fairview, Pa.; reduced slightly at left, Fine and scarce Union Army Occupation Post Office use.
Estimate; $100 - 150.

Mitchellsville, sometimes designated Mitchellsville Station by the P.O. Dept., was on the Louisville & Nashville Railroad, near the Kentucky state line. Thus Union Troops, if not stationed there, frequently passed through or camped there. It was listed in the July 1862 issue of the U.S. Mail & P.O. Ass't as a Tennessee Post Office recently reopened, and it operated as a Union Army Occupation office, except when closed by military activity, throughout the war.

Dennis, Harrisburg Pa. who was a strong abolitionist of the era, reverse bears a long "Memorial to Congress" giving the sender an opportunity to sign a petition to Congress to enact the abolition of slavery under its war powers; slightly rough opening at top, otherwise Very Fine and rare used design, a fabulous abolition patriotic use, ex-Walcott.
