image 1859 Gold Mining Letter from La Grange, Cal, enclosure in a cover addressed to Atlanta franked with 3c Dull red (26), tied by "La Grange Ca May 12" cds, Fine; letter dated May 11 starts with "..let you know how the people is getting of the gold down hear.", "...the people has bin searching for so long it is sayd to be the richest mine that has ever been discovered in the state...", and encourages Mr Wilkes to come and visit to see for himself; there is an addition to the letter dated May 18th concerning the mining interest and some Court issuesrnIn 1849, a group of French sailors jumped ship in San Francisco Bay, commandeered a small whaleboat, and set sail for the gold mines. Upon reaching a promising location on the Tuolumne River, they commenced mining and were rewarded for their desertion by discovering rich placers. The sailors sent word to friends and relatives and their small camp grew into quite a sizable settlement, known throughout the region as French Bar or French Camp. The name changed to La Grange in 1854 and had become an important city and in January of 1856, it became the county seat of Stanislaus County, which it remained until 1862 when the seat was voted away to Knights Ferry. By this time the easily obtained placer gold had been mined out (Image)

image "Appraiser Generals Office/ San Francisco Oct 31 1853" heading on a letter to George Gordon (Boston Postmaster) in response to his letter (notes he was just about to publish it in the newspaper) concerning mail problems to California from the East Coast, mentions mails left on the Isthmus of Panama due to "the accident to the Railroad Bridge", also comments regarding mail service to interior California cities and towns and the eagerness of the residents to receive such mail saying "...the whole people turn out in a body and rush for the Post Office. Long lines are formed to every delivery some five or ten and $5 id frequently paid to a man near the window for his chance...", ends by denying he's made any charges against Boston postal clerks and offices but simply wants to explain California's feelings and that he maintains the Boston Post Office "the model post office", Very Fine; accompanied by an 1853 "Placer Times & Transcript" clipping commenting on poor quality of postal service to San Francisco (Image)
