Sharp cds with matching target cancel ties 3¢ green (147) on yellow cover to Philadelphia Pa., original illustrated letterhead enclosure Mammoth Grove Hotel datelined "Calaveras County, Cal., May 31st 1871" showing gazebo and cut down redwood stump, some interesting content "At last we are en route for the "Zeo Semite", having left Frisco Monday morning at 8 a.m. via C.P.R.R. arriving at Stockton about 12:30 where our carriages were awaiting us…we pushed on to Copperopolis…a distance of thirty-eight miles. This place was one time the great mining district of Copper from which it takes its name. The mine is not in operation now…we started for Murphy's, a distance of fifteen miles where we arrived…at Big Trees…Wednesday morning we rambled among the Giants of the Forest"… I measured two of them myself. One called "Pride of the Forest" measured sixty-three feet in circumference, and the other "Phil Sheridan" seventy and a half feet, and they are so beautiful…"; cover opening tear, otherwise Very Fine and attractive.

Cover without postage endorsed "San Francisco Fire" at top right and cancelled by "San Francisco, Cal., Apr 28, 1906" duplex to Vancouver, Wash., with original datelined letter with excellent content including "…I was down in what was once the city of San Francisco yesterday and all that is left is a pile of brick and stone and twisted iron and mortar. You can't tell one street from another and it makes one's heart sick to look at the terrible wreck…"; some light aging and flap torn, otherwise Very Fine.

The San Francisco earthquake hit at 5:12AM on April 18th, 1906. The Post Office survived the quake and allowed mail to be sent postage free to help expedite news from the now devastated city.
