image Canada AEF, 1914 (Oct 17) Cover to Canadian Soldier, 2c Admiral tied by Montreal machine cancel and addressed to soldier in the South Lancaster Regt of the British Expeditionary Force, ms "Missing BWP" and a framed "Unable to Trace/ Army Post Office/ Expeditionary Force" handstamp, backstamped "Dead Letter Branch/ Ottawa, Canada/ FE 2 15", opened at top and some small edge tears/ faults along the right edge with a light crease affecting the stamp, still Fine and scarce marking; the Army Post Office was located in the offices of Companie Transatlantique in Le Havre, France; the soldier was most likely a member of the 2nd Battalion of the regiment which landed at Le Havre in August 1914 and spent the entire war on the Western Front. image "Passed by Internment Censor/ Amherst, N.S. Oct 18 1917", initialed 38mm censor date stamp on an envelope addressed to Sackville, N.B., an Amherst N.S. Oct 9 1917 machine cancel overlaps the censor marking, ms "fr. W. Bolge/ Amherst N.S./ Off. Det. Camp/ 842" on backflap and with a Sackville N.B, OC 10 backstamp, light central vertical fold, Very FinernAmherst Internment Camp, an internment camp located at the Malleable Iron Works, operated from 1914 to 1919 in Amherst, Nova Scotia. It was the largest POW camp in Canada during World War I with a maximum of 853 prisoners housed at one time. A few civilian internees were also detained here, the most famous being the Russian revolutionary Leon Trotsky who was detained on order of British authorities from March-May 1917. (Image)

The intervention brought about the involvement of foreign troops in the Russian Civil War on the side of the White movement. The movement was ultimately defeated, while the Allied forces withdrew from Northern Russia after fighting several defensive actions against the Bolsheviks. The Canadian contingent to this international force was the 67th and 68th Field Batteries of the 16th Brigade Field Artillery. (Image)
