AN EXTREMELY RARE ON COVER USAGE OF THE 1923 2¢ HARDING ISSUE WITH SCHERMACK TYPE III PERFORATIONS - ONE OF AT LEAST SEVEN RECORDED ON COVER USAGES.

Includes a copy of a October 23, 1924 letter from the Mail-o-Meter Company stating…"In response to your inquiry, please be advised that we did perforate a few two cent Harding stamps, the exact amount, however, I cannot say. as our records are not clear regarding the various issues which are perforated and reeled by the Schermack method." with a memo below by Karl Koslowski who addressed this cover and was the one who discovered the rare 1908 4¢ issue with Schermack type III perfs.

In combination with 1938, $1 purple & black, left margin block of ten and single (832) on oversized package from Weyerhaeuser & Co. in St. Paul, Minn. to the Continental Illinois National Bank in Chicago, Ill., partial purple St. Paul registry cds's at one end with matching boxed registry handstamp etiquette on mailing label, stamps canceled by wavy line roller cancels, purple "Chicago, Ill., Reg. Div., Aug 6, 1955" receiving cds at right, blue pen addition at top adding to "111.29" for postage (the 29¢ likely paid in cash during posting); $5 block with some separations at bottom and light selvage wrinkling, F.-V.F., one of the highest Prexie issue franking we have ever encountered.

Although this is a late Prexie issue franking, it does predate the issuance of the following Liberty issue high values with the $1 Henry issued in October of 1955 and the $5 Hamilton in March of 1956.

Scott catalog states that this small hole variety is only known with Bureau precancel and it was against postal regulations to make mint precancels available other than to permit holders. Due to this restriction, only a small handful of mint line pairs exist today.
