image 1911, 3¢ deep violet, S.L. watermark, the "Orangeburg" coil (Scott 389), remarkably well-centered for this notorious issue, with deep, bold color and sharp detail; tied by "Orangeburg, N.Y./MAY 22/1911" wavy-line machine cancel to bluish gray Bell & Company corner card cover addressed to Pittsburgh, Very Fine and choice stamp, the cover with normal edge wear, only 13 covers have been certified as genuine by the Philatelic Foundation, ex Gross, Zoellner, Keebler, signed Ezra D. Cole under backflap, with 1987 P.F. certificate.

The Orangeburg coil was made by the Post Office Department in 1911 specifically for use by the Bell Pharmaceutical Company to send product samples to physicians. Due to the quantity of mail, they were put through the first-class cancelling machine at Orangeburg, New York. Their use on third-class mail, and the fact that philatelists were generally unaware of their production, accounts for their rarity.
