image 1911, 3¢ deep violet, the "Orangeburg" coil (Scott 389), machine cancel, premium quality large-margined example with breathtaking color; an awesome Orangeburg coil, Very Fine for this issue, these stamps are incredibly rare to find sound and are missing from most collections, with 2018 P.S.E. certificate.
Scott $10,000.
Estimate $12,000 - 18,000

In 1911, Bell Pharmaceutical Co. in Orangeburg, New York, placed a small order of the new 3¢ coil stamps to send physician's samples. These stamps were considered by collectors at the time to be inferior because they had not just one, but two straight edges, and many of the stamps had creases and tears. The importance of these experimental stamps wasn't realized until later. Out of this original limited supply came one of the great rarities of philately…the "Orangeburg" coil.
