Daniel F. Kelleher Auctions, LLC Sale: 757

United States
1881-1882 American Bank Note Co. Issue, re-engrave
Sale No: 757
Lot No: 284
Symbol: (Cat No: 205C

image 1882, 5¢ gray brown, Special Printing (Scott 205C), without gum as issued, a magnificent stamp in luxuriant color with sharp lines and near-perfect centering, Extremely Fine, one to dress up even the most elegant collection, ex Neinken, "Southern Cross", Weisman, Lyons and McKinney. Siegel Census #205C-UNC-12, with 1994 A.P.S. (submitted by Mortimer Neinken himself), 1991 P.F., 1993 P.S.E., and 2008 P.F. certificates, the last graded XF 90.
SMQ XF 90; $95,000.

Post Office records indicate 2,463 examples of the 5¢ Special Printing were sold, but research by William E. Mooz, published in a February 1992
Chronicle article, provides strong evidence that the majority of "Special Printings" sold were actually from supplies of the regularly issued stamp. The actual Special Printings came from a small supply sent to the Third Assistant Post Master General before the regular issue was available. An exceedingly rare stamp.
