Schuyler J. Rumsey Philatelic Auctions Sale: 97

United States
1870-75 Bank Note Issues

Sale No: 97
Lot No: 1147
Symbol:
Cat No: 139

image 1870, 10¢ brown, H. grill, N.B.N.C. printing. Used with 12¢ dull violet (151), tied together by NYFM circular 5-section grid cancel, red "New York '12' Jul 6" credit exchange cds on 1870 mourning cover to Lima, Peru at the 22¢ British mail rate, Lima (8.1) arrival backstamp, Very Fine and scarce 10¢ grilled use to Peru, with 1998 A.P.S. certificate.
Scott No. 139; Estimate $500 - 750.

This is a very early use of the 12¢ Bank Note issue, this being the earliest use abroad but also most likely the earliest use overall. A suspicious June 17, 1870 domestic use exists from Paxton, Illinois, but we have our doubts to the stamp originating.
