image 1853-59, Toppan Carpenter Casilear & Co. Stamp Contract Letters to J. Marron, 3rd Assist. Postmaster General. Remarkable group of approximately. 112 contemporary original and duplicate letters mostly concerning deliveries of 1¢ and 3¢ stamps, perforations and the new 1857 issue, noted includes April 4th 1853 letter concerning gum issues in detail: "…It is a matter of much surprise to use that there should be complaints now of the adhesiveness of the Stamps. We had supposed that they were now so perfect that complaint could not be made…", and additional commentary requesting and sending samples to correct gum, July 16th 1853 letter concerning distribution of Eagle carrier stamps: "As we are in doubt as to the wished of the Department in relation to the delivery of Despatch Stamps (or Carriers Stamps) we will feel much obliged if you will have the kindness to inform us whether we are right in supposing that we are at liberty to furnish said Stamps to any Postmaster of the United States who may apply and pay for the Same? We have already furnished some to the Post Master of this City and today we furnished 40,000 to James G Berrey Esq. Postmaster of your City - this we did under the statement & impression that you had authorized such deliveries…", Jan. 23rd 1854: "…We regret that we are unable to forward you a larger number of Stamps today, but the demand having exceeded our expectations we have not kept all the plates in hand - we will immediately put them all in press…", the Chicago, Apr. 3rd 1856 letter from E.W. Hedley, the inventor of Chicago Perfs enclosing a 3¢ sheet perforated using his machine: "…Some months since my attention was called by Col. R.K. Swift, Banker of this City to want said to be felt by the Post Office Department as well as the commercial community, of proper simple Machinery for the division of Postage Stamps. I have since then experimented to some extent on various plans for effecting this object and have very recently completed a chine, the results of which seem to correspond precisely with the English mode of separation…I have this day filed a Caveat in the Patent Office…Enclosed I send a Sample of three cent Stamps as perforated…" (This letter was missing but mentioned in Wagshal's article on Chicago Perfs), letters concerning acquiring a perforation machine April 7th 1856: "We have advice of the shipment of the "Perforator" which we ordered made for us several months since in England July 1st 1856: "…We are anxious to get possession of our perforating machine and put it in operation within the next week…" and July 7th 1856: "…Our object in getting possession of the machine was that we might by experimenting test its power and capacity, and thus be prepared to make our proposals…We will now pay the duties and take the machine from the Custom House at once…" and some detail on comparison of expenses to the British Government, April 24th 1856 concerning the new 24¢ stamp: "…We have now the pleasure of enclosing proofs of the new 24 Cents Stamp, which we beg you to have the kindness to present to the Postmaster General for his approval…", and additional letters from Toppan concerning perforation experiments and pricing, Oct 22nd 1856: "…I have completed experiments with your punching & Slitting machine & will give you the results…", Nov. 4th 1856: "…We have the honor to submit for your consideration the following proposals to contract for furnishing Postage Stamps (as heretofore) with the addition of perforation of each sheet (as per samples submitted by us)…", Jan. 5th 1857 concerning the perforation proposal: "…You say - 'It has been determined not to act upon any subject which can be properly considered as belonging to the succeeding administration' ", etc., wealth of first hand information, F.-V.F.

image 1857, 1¢ blue, type V. Horizontal pair with s.e. at left, tied by two strikes of the small double-circle New York City Delivery cds on square envelope addressed to "Hon. George Bancroft, the Great Historian of the Unit. States of N. A.", neat blue oval consular sender's cachet, the left stamp with natural straight edge at left, Very Fine, a nice example of the combined carrier and drop rates.
Scott No. 24; Estimate $300 - 400.

The addressee, founder of the United States Naval Academy, Secretary of the Navy, Ambassador to Great Britain and to Spain, was the pre-eminent American historian of the 19th century. His massive multi-volume History of the United States is still a basic reference today. While the sender's address may have been rather flowery, it hardly overstated the case.

image 1857, 3¢ dull red, type III. Tied by "Cleveland O. Jul 23, 1860" cds on cover with spectacular Abraham Lincoln and Hannibal Hamlin campaign cover to Des Moines Iowa; design shows beardless Lincoln portrait design with "The Cold Water Candidate" heading and additional overprinting "Temperance and Freedom" advertising on face by "The Analyst" newspaper weekly of Cleveland Oh., flap with additional subscription info, minor flap opening tear, Very Fine and choice, with 2019 P.F. certificate. Milgram No. AL-36 var.
Scott No. 26; Estimate $5,000 - 7,500.

AN EXCEPTIONAL EXAMPLE OF THIS RARE LINCOLN AND HAMLIN "THE COLDWATER CANDIDATE" 1860 CAMPAIGN DESIGN OVERPRINTED WITH TEMPERANCE AND FREEDOM CAMPAIGN SENTIMENTS.

Temperance advocates embraced Lincoln as their choice for president in the 1860 election, naming him the "Cold Water" candidate. Envelope designs using this temperance theme are rare, and they were all published by M. H. Allardt of Cleveland. The Analyst newspaper was started in 1858 by J. A. Spencer, who apparently sold it to M. H. Allardt before 1860. Including this cover, we are aware of only four examples of the AL-36 design, but no other examples with the additional temperance overprint on face.
