The perforated Type I stamps were produced from C Relief positions on Plate 12. This stamp has complete plumes at bottom, yet the top right is almost completely missing. Dick Celler plated this as position 88R12 despite other examples of this position showing full the complete design.

The 1¢ type II 1857 issue is a surprisingly difficult stamp to find in superb condition. The highest grade awarded by the P.S.E. in mint or used condition is XF-Superb 95, with only five total examples (3 used, 2 mint). For the second most common stamp after the Type V, this shows how difficult it is to find this stamp in truly outstanding condition.

Elmer Ellsworth (1837-61) was a US Army officer and law clerk who was the first conspicuous casualty and the first Union officer to die in the Civil War. He was killed while removing a Confederate flag from the roof of the Marshall House Inn in Alexandria, Virginia. He was a close personal friend of Abraham Lincoln, who as President later eulogized him as "the greatest little man I ever met". After his death, Ellsworth's body lay in state at the White House.
