image "Camp Floyd, UT, Jan 14". Manuscript postmark with matching manuscript cross-hatch cancelling 3¢ dull red (11A), rich color, on cover from the Porter correspondence to New York City, Very Fine and choice Utah Territorial use, ex-Risvold.
Estimate; $500 - 750.

On 9 November 1858, amid gun fire and patriotic music, the soldiers of Camp Floyd, Utah Territory, raised the United States flag above their newly completed garrison. Named for Secretary of War, John B. Floyd, the post housed the largest concentration of U.S. troops to that time, in what immediately became the third largest city in Utah. Camp Floyd was a product of the so-called ""Utah War."" Influenced by rumors of rebellion in Utah, President James Buchanan ordered 2,500 soldiers led by Colonel Albert Sidney Johnston to Utah. After a short stay at the north end of the valley, Johnston moved his men across a creek from present-day Fairfield where soldiers, aided by Mormon laborers and artisans, built Camp Floyd. By December of 1858 Camp Floyd had its own post office using a manuscript postmark.

Jan. 23" cds and matching "Paid" handstamp with magenta "25" rating to Detroit Mich., interesting letter content about Captain leaving for Palatka (post nearest Savannah) due to sickness and the horrible conditions at the post: "…Most of the Officers at the Post have had it…This is a miserable Country, in Winter it is Fever and Ague, and in Summer it is Fever of the worst kind, it is very rarely any one escapes being sick two months at a time, Those who have been in the Country any length of time look like walking ghosts…"; light stain, F.-V.F. and scarce use from the short-lived Fort Fanning.
Estimate; $300 - 400.

Fort Fanning, Florida was built in November 1838 during the Second Seminole War and was first called "Palmetto". Later it was renamed in honor of Colonel Alexander Campbell Wilder Fanning, who had served under General Andrew Jackson in the First Seminole War. Its purpose was to protect the highly strategic and heavily utilized crossing of the Suwannee River. It also served as a base of operations for U.S. and Florida Militia troops that tried to suppress the activities of small bands of Creek and Seminole warriors that operated from the vast swamps of the lower Suwannee River. Raids and battles were a constant part of life in the region for both whites and Indians during the years 1836-1842. The fort was garrisoned for nearly five years, during which time, 31 soldiers lost their lives, all but three of them from sickness. The post was abandoned in February 1843 and because it was made of wood and situated in a warm humid climate, it soon deteriorated.

Estimate; $300 - 400.

Fort Sanders, Dakota Territory was a wooden fort constructed in 1866 on the Laramie Plains in southern Wyoming, near the city of Laramie. Originally named Fort John Buford, it was renamed Fort Sanders after General William P. Sanders who died at the Siege of Knoxville during the American Civil War. This was the second fort to be named after Sanders, the first being in Knoxville, Tennessee. The fort was originally intended to protect travelers on the nearby Overland Trail from Indian attacks, but later the garrison was tasked with protecting the workers of the Union Pacific railroad when it arrived in the spring of 1868. In 1869 the town of Laramie (originally called "Laramie City") was created about 3 miles (4.8 km) north of the fort. Fort Sanders became less important following the construction of Fort D. A. Russell in Cheyenne in 1868, but the War Department maintained it until 1882 when the buildings were sold.

Fort Zarah was a fort in Barton County, Kansas, northeast of present-day Great Bend, Kansas, that was used from 1864 to 1869. In July 1864, because of frequent attacks from indigenous tribes in the area, Camp Dunlap was established 2 miles east of present-day Great Bend, Kansas, where the Santa Fe Trail crossed Walnut Creek. At first the camp was a series of tents and dugouts on the riverbank close to the Rath Ranch (trading post). However work immediately started on a more permanent facility about 100 yards from the dugouts and renamed Fort Zarah. In 1866 it was replaced by a second Fort Zarah built about 1/2 mile up river. Ft. Zarah was abandoned in 1869. Even though Fort Zarah had a short life, it saw its share of skirmishes with local Native American tribes and colorful characters including George Armstrong Custer, Wild Bill Hickok, Buffalo Bill Mathewson, Buffalo Bill Cody, Kit Carson, and the Kiowa chief Satank aka Sitting Bear.
