Hawaii, Kahului Railroad, 1898, 5¢ dark blue, on pelure paper, Schmidt printing, block of 4, unused without gum, the stamps with surprisingly strong color and wide margins, designs with streaks of missing ink, Very Fine for this, an oddity worth investigating. Meyer-Harris 157 var.
Originally offered as one of three blocks in the Honolulu Advertiser Collection auction (Part 3, Lot #3927) as the second block in the Lot's "pelure paper backing which shows a clear pass-through of the ink—a nearly complete image of all four stamps, giving the appearance of an 'experimental' proof." These are clearly printed on their face (not bleed-through from a sheet below), but no reference we've seen refers to "pelure backing" for this issue. A possible sleeper.
