Dwight Baldwin (1798-1886) was an American Christian missionary and physician on Maui, one of the Hawaiian Islands, during the Kingdom of Hawaii. One of his sons, Henry Perrine Baldwin (1842-1911) married Emily Whitney Alexander in 1869 and co-founded with Samuel Thomas Alexander the partnership of Alexander & Baldwin, one of the "Big Five" corporations that dominated Hawaii's economy in the early 20th century.

image Hawaii, 1874 Colonel Moehonua Lunch Invitation. 5½x3" printed card addressed to Archibald S. Cleghorn for a luncheon on November 26, 1874, Very Fine.
Estimate; $150 - 200.

William Luther Moehonua in 1873 was given the rank of Major in the royal guard of King Lunalilo and later in command of 'Iolani Barracks. He was elected to the Legislature of the Hawaiian Kingdom of 1874 as a representative for Oahu. On April 27, 1874 he was promoted to rank of Colonel and then on October 31st, just before this luncheon, he was appointed Minister of the Interior.

Born in England, Frederick H. Hayselden had emigrated to Hawaii in 1868 to embark upon a remarkably varied career, in which he was employed at one time or another during the reign of Kalakaua as Secretary of the Board of Health, the Sheriff of Maui, and the Manager of the Pacific Commercial Advertiser newspaper, and he was later appointed Sheriff of Lanai by Liliuokalani.

Group of 10 covers; includes seven interisland and three to the U.S. west coast, mostly Honolulu commercial usages with interisland usages bearing corner cards including "Charles J. Falk, Member Honolulu Stock Exchange" (2), "Hawaiian Gazette Company", "Castle & Cooke, Ltd." (2) and "Benson, Smith & Co.", two cover with disinfection punch holes at each corner and others with corner slits, one postmarked "Apr 30, 1900" on the last day of fumigation with apparent fumigation treatment, two to San Francisco (Scott 82 franking) with one with "Theo H. Davies & Co. Ltd." corner card on backflap, and one with double 5¢ franking (82) to Seattle, Wash. with corner disinfection slits, F.-V.F. or better.
Estimate; $500 - 750.

The bubonic plague has spread from Hong Kong to Hawaii in the latter part of 1899 and quickly broke out in Chinatown in Honolulu. Because of the outbreak, fumigation was required on all mail from December of 1899 until April 30, 1900.
