Military Prison - Cairo, Ill., Small, pink-lined lady's envelope without postal markings, which would have been enclosed in a larger cover - addressed to J.W. Hughes, Military Prison, Cairo, Ill., "To care of Provost Marshall", Very Fine. One of only three recorded Cairo Military Prison P.O.W. covers.
Hughes was captured Jan 19, 1862 at Mill Springs, Ky. He was first sent to Camp Chase, then, on April 17th, transferred to Johnson's Island. He was then sent back to Camp Chase on May 24th. Finally, on August 25th, he was started to Vicksburg for exchange, stopping briefly at Cairo on the way. (Image)

Gordon, a P.O.W. at Camp Chase in Columbus, O.; 3¢ rose tied by a weak blue grid and matching Chicago c.d.s., Mar. 3 (1862); manuscript "Examined, R. Adams Jr GMJ" on the top flap; somewhat soiled, stamp slightly damaged, flap reinforced, Fine, signed B. Green.
Not to be confused with the George Washington Gordon who rose to the rank of Brigadier General, this George Washington Gordon, along with the 48th Regiment of the Tennessee Infantry, was captured during the surrender of Fort Donelson in February 1862. He was first sent to Camp Chase and then, in May, to Johnson’s Island in Lake Erie. In September 1862 he was part of a prisoner exchange, the officers and men of the 48th were sent by boat to Vicksburg, Mississippi and released. Gordon, however had become gravely ill and when the boat carrying him and others docked at Memphis, Gordon's sister, a nurse, tried to get him off the boat but was denied. The day after the boat reached Vicksburg, Gordon was dead. (Image)
