Fort Donelson - Tenn., Cover from Lt. Henry L. Muldrow [Co. C, 14th Miss. Infantry] to his wife at Tibbee Station, "Mobile & Ohio R.R.", Miss.; Muldrow's letter traveled down the Tennessee River to Burnsville, Miss. where it entered C.S.A. mails about Feb. 23rd (partial Burnsville c.d.s. with the stamp missing); it went from Burnsville to Tibbee Station on the Mobile & Ohio R.R.; censor's manuscript "Examined by, Lt. H. Wilson, 20th Regt, 0.V.U.S.A."; top flap sewn shut with brown thread; edge wear, Fine to Very Fine. The only recorded P.O.W. usage from here; and the only one with a sewn flap.
Prisoners were held several days at Fort Donelson before being sent farther north. (Image)

Knoxville Prison - Knoxville, Tenn., Inside envelope from some point in the South "Per Flag of truce" to Rev Timothy Sullins, a "citizen prisoner" in the Knoxville prison; franked with a 3¢ rose - uncancelled and sent "Care of J.S. Van Gilder & Co."; manuscript Confederate censor's marking on the back "P.M. Hd. Qrs., Bristol T. July 18, 64, Examined & Appd., W.C. Kain, Capt & P.M.", Very Fine. The only recorded P.O.W. correspondence to or from this prison.
Sullins was a Methodist Minister at Athens, Tenn.; notice of his incarceration as a hostage appeared in the Richmond Daily Dispatch on July 22, 1864. J.S. Van Gilder was a manufacturer, banker, postmaster and Mayor of Knoxville. (Image)
