image Allegheny Penitentiary - Allegheny City, Pa., Pair of covers and a letter from Lt. Van J. Sellers [2nd Ky. Cavalry], a P.O.W. at Allegheny Penitentiary, to his future wife in Keene, Ky.; both covers are franked with a 3¢ rose and postmarked Pittsburgh, Pa., Sep 12, 1863, and Feb 8, 1864, respectively; the first with examiner's manuscript "Exmd, D.D. Wheeler, ADC", the second unmarked. The letter is headed "State Prison Allegheny CitY Penna. Sept. 9th 1863". In it Sellers, who was captured July 1863 during Morgan's raid into Ohio, writes of his infant son, "My namesake is unquestionably a prodigy and doubtless will in time make a superb Cavalry Officer, for the present I think him much better qualified to lead an infantry charge against breastworks.", Fine. Only 22 Allegheny Penitentiary P.O.W. covers are recorded. (Image)

image U.S. Hospital - Chester, Pa., Cover from Maj. William N. Berkeley, captured at Gettysburg, and temporarily being treated at the U.S. Hospital, Chester, Pa. (before being transferred to Johnson's Island); with censors manuscript "Examined & approved" above a blue handstamped "Ebn Swift"; sent as the inner envelope in Flag of Truce mail to his wife in Verdon, Hanover Co., Va., entering the C.S.A. mails at Richmond with an Aug 25, 1863 c.d.s. and handstamped "Due 10", Very Fine. One of only seven recorded P.O.W. covers from this facility.


Included is a photocopy of part of the original letter [not present] datelined "U S Hospital Chester Pa. Aug 3rd 1863" in which Berkeley writes, "I have written to you frequently but will continue to write hoping that at least one of my letters will reach you." and "I have met with several of my Pennsylvania relatives and acquaintances."

Regiment], wounded at Antietam, and being treated at Cuyler General Hospital; the "inside" envelope in Flag of Truce mail, entering the C.S.A. mails at Richmond with a pair of 5¢ blue Local print tied by a partial Richmond c.d.s., Feb 6, 1863; Coombs wrote at the top, "4 U.S. Stamps enclosed to pay for postage", the Hospital Surgeon, acting as censor, wrote "Exd W.B."; top flap missing, left corners somewhat rounded, signed Kimbrough.


THE ONLY RECORDED P.O.W. MAIL TO OR FROM THIS FACILITY.

A photocopy of a page from Coombs' hospital record shows that he was admitted to the Hospital on Oct 1, 1862 with a "G S W. femur" (gunshot wound), and that he was later transferred to Ft. Delaware on Mar 27, 1863".

Infantry, the "inside" envelope in Flag of Truce mail, to Moffets Creek, Augusta Co., Va., entering the C.S.A. mails at Richmond where a C.S.A. 5¢ blue lithograph was tied by a Jun 29, 1862 c.d.s.; manuscript "Examined, Robt Thompson, Lieut Col 115 Pa Vols, Provost Marshal" by the officer in charge of the guard unit at Camp Curtin; reduced slightly at the right, Fine to Very Fine. The only recorded P.O.W. cover to or from this facility—additionally, fewer than a dozen of the five-cent blue lithographed are recorded on P.O.W. mail.


A photocopy of a page from Hite's record shows that he was captured at Newtown, Va. on June 11, 1862, and held for two weeks at Harrisburg, Pa. before being moved from Camp Curtin to Fort Delaware by Lt. Col. Thompson on June 26. On August 26 of that same year, Hite was released as part of a prisoner exchange.
