Fort Fisher - near Wilmington, N.C., Adversity cover made from a printed legal form, from Pvt. John McLaurin [Co. G, 40th N.C.Troops]; "By Flag of Truce" to Morven, Anson County, N.C., entering the C.S.A. mails at Wilmington, N.C. with a handstamped type I "10" (due); small, very faint penciled "Examined, A. Terry, Capt AAG" at the upper right; reduced somewhat at the right, Fine. The only recorded cover from this temporary prison.
Private McLaurin was captured on Jan 15, 1865, when Fort Fisher fell. He was held there briefly, before being sent to Elmira, N.Y., where he died on Feb 13th; The censor, Capt. Adrian Terry, was younger brother of Major General Alfred Terry who led the attack on, and capture of, Fort Fisher. (Image)
