Regt.], a wounded prisoner in the field hospital near Antietam Creek, to his wife in Griffin, Ga.; it entered the C.S.A. mails at Winchester, Va. with an Oct 5 (1862) c.d.s. and handstamped "Due" & "10". Also included is another cover sent two months earlier from Private Smoot to his wife, postmarked Richmond, Aug 1862, and "Due 10"; the first cover is reduced slightly at the top, the latter slightly at the right, Fine. One of just two recorded covers from this field hospital.


Smoot died in the hospital eight days after the second letter was mailed

image Fort McHenry - Baltimore, Md., Inner envelope of Flag of Truce mail from Col. William. H. Forney [10th Ala. Infantry], a P.O.W. at Fort McHenry; sent through Richmond with a mostly complete May 7 (1864) c.d.s. and handstamped "Due 10", to Jacksonville, Ala., Very Fine.


Forney was wounded on four different occasions and captured twice, the first time being exchanged. He was left on the field at Gettysburg, with multiple wounds, remaining a Union P.O.W. from July 5, 1863 until August 4, 1864, when he was paroled. In February 1865, he was promoted to Brigadier General. After the war he was a successful politician, serving in the U.S. House of Representatives from 1875 until 1893

Lawson/ Major &/ Chief Prov. Marshal/ Dist. of N.C." (PWH-20); highly specific address to "Mrs. Mary A. Askins, Care of Arthur Gaskins Esq., Fort Anderson Way of Newbern N.C. Provost Marshal Newbern please forward From the Fort, Some kind one please forward From the Fort"; includes the original letter, datelined the same day, relating conditions and requesting money; written in another hand, but signed by Askins, Very Fine. Only recorded example of this censor marking used on prisoners' mail.


Major Henry T. Lawson, the Provost Marshal at New Bern, N.C., died of yellow fever a few weeks after this letter was received. An epidemic of the disease spread through New Bern in September-October 1864. Lawson contracted it while valiantly helping to successfully contain the spread of a fire that had been deliberately set to some commissary warehouses that were believed to contain the basis of the fever in their stagnant cellars.

Brady, June 26 1865, Major and Provost Marshal", octagonal handstamp on an otherwise blank envelope that would have enclosed a "Certificate of Release of Prisoner of War" from Point Lookout. This is the only recorded example of this marking on an envelope, Very Fine.


Also included is a photocopy of such a certificate for one Thomas G. Penn dated June 16, 1865, signed by Brady and bearing his handstamp with that date (75% of actual size). The certificates were prepared in duplicate, the released prisoner's copy going into an envelope such as this.

Ailstock had become a "Galvanized Yankee", taken the Oath of Allegiance and joined the Union Army. In June of 1864, he was on guard duty in Norfolk, Va.

Local Defense Troops] — "The Boy Company of Richmond", to his mother in occupied Richmond; Point Lookout target duplex, Apr 21, 1865 ties a 3¢ rose; undated octagonal Examined handstamp (PWH-17). The second latest recorded use of this marking.

The second cover is an Adversity usage, made of wrapping paper, from Hill's mother in occupied Richmond to the prison via Old Point Comfort, with a 3¢ rose tied by a quartered cork cancel alongside an Apr 30th Old Point Comfort c.d.s.; marked with the manuscript examiner's "G" at the prison.


After the war, William Maury Hill became a very successful, nationally known Banker. Included are two newspaper obituaries from January 1918.

Both writers were originally from the same area near Durham, N.C. as the addressee and all knew each other before the war. Hugh Davis Smith, a P.O.W. at Point Lookout, datelined "Prisoners Camp, Dec 21st 1863", to "My Loving Mother, Kind Brother & Fond Sisters". Three clues lead to the conclusion that the letter was smuggled: 1.) the letter is written on both sides of the sheet - against regulations; 2.) Smith signed only his initials: "H" on the main letter and "HDS" on a postscript - another violation; and 3.) in the letter he wrote, "An opportunity has offered itself by some of my fellow prisoners…who leave on tomorrow for the South"…"This will have to go in the black.", Fine to Very Fine.
