Cat No: 85a
1919-21 Pictorial Issue. Issued Stamps. 1/- Frame Inverted. A Fine Used Example of this Famous and Important World-Renowned Rarity. 1/- orange-yellow and red-orange, variety frame inverted, wonderful colours and centreing, neatly cancelled by part Manchioneal datestamp. An outstanding example of this variety, one of the rarest stamps of Jamaica. S.G. 85a, £25,000. Photo Note: In March 1922 a small block of stamps, reported as ten and described as with centre's inverted, was found at the Manchioneal Post Office, a small village on the north east coast of the island. The General Post Office at Kingston had confirmed that only half a sheet of thirty stamps would have been sent to the Manchioneal Post Office at any one time. The majority of these stamps would probably have been used on telegrams, as at that time of the year the village was an active centre for the purchase and shipping of bananas. Some were probably also used on Thrift Savings cards, a system similar to that operated by the Post Office Department in the U.K. Examples taken from telegraph forms could not be recognised as other than postally used, as the cancelling datestamp was the same for both services. The other half of the sheet has not been positively traced, though was most likely sold over the counter at the Kingston Post Office as examples with their cancellation exist. It is believed that between ten and twenty examples exist(Image1)
