Cat No: 1897.03.02

image image 1897 (Mar. 2), Cover ("Custom House/Canton" embossed seal on reverse) from Canton to Hong Kong, showing "Paid" bilingual handstamp in red, with "Customs/Canton" type C double-ring origin datestamp alongside, and "Hong Kong/B" arrival c.d.s. on reverse, Fine to Very Fine, an important usage from Canton and the earliest recorded use of the "Paid" handstamp from Canton,

One of only seven recorded covers with this handstamp in combination with the Canton Customs dater, which was used between March 2 and June 12, 1897, and then replaced by the Large Dollar Dater from July 22, 1897.

The standardized "Paid" bilingual handstamp was applied in lieu of postage stamps during the first year of the Imperial Post, due to delays in the supply of the first definitive issue of the I.C.P. stamps which were printed in Japan and unavailabe at this time, and shortages of the New Currency surcharges, which were only available on an irregular basis. The "Paid" handstamps were used from February 10, 1897 (Amoy) until the end of 1897, when Postal Circulars Nos. 4 & 5 forbade their use from January 1, 1898.
