1848-O Liberty PCGS VF25. Scarce issue with only 35,850 coins minted, and as the grade indicates, it was struck at a time when many of the gold issues entered circulation. Potential bidders should consider that this coin is a hundred times rarer than the common dates, but not that much more expensive. (Image)

1853-O Liberty NGC AU53 pedigreed to the Eric P. Newman Collection. This issue is prohibitively rare in mint state. Records show that 13 were recovered from the wreck of the SS Republic (sunk in 1865), and only 1 coin was borderline mint state, so the present offering should be carefully considered by anyone wanting rare-date gold. Most coin enthusiasts are familiar with the previous owner of this piece - numismatic luminary Eric P. Newman from St. Louis who was widely cited as an expert in many series and was a prolific writer on most of them. An attorney by profession, he was also the sponsor of the Newman Numismatic Portal at Washington University in St Louis (nnp.wustl.edu) that houses numismatic literature on just about everything. A book on Newman's life written by Augsburger, Burdette, and Orosz, "Truth Seeker: The Life of Eric P. Newman" (2015), describes Newman's role in the ultimate determination that renowned "Penny Whimsy" author Dr. William Sheldon stole many important large cents from the American Numismatic Society. (It should be noted that Sheldon has his loyal defenders though, so the debate regarding his alleged misdeeds lives on.) In 2017, Newman died at the age of 106. Many of his coins were graded by NGC since his passing, and have been widely dispersed. The present coin is an excellent example. (Image)
1850-O Liberty NGC AU55. In their "Encyclopedia of US Gold Coins" authors Garrett and Guth say this about 1850-O Quarter Eagles: " . . . . . the most interesting feature of this issue is the extremely poor quality of the strike on most known examples. The date is scarce in all grades and only a few are offered for sale most years. This date is VERY RARE in full mint state . . . . . . " In light of the Garrett and Guth comments, the present example shows strong detail, even light wear consistent with its assigned grade, and has excellent original color. Be sure to inspect this one if you have any interest in truly scarce coins. (Image)
